OK, so i’ve been to 5 out of 7 continents, I’ve got two left to tick off but unfortunately I’m not flush with cash so I’ll have to hold out on the trip to Antarctica. In which case I better get my ass into gear and head to Africa. I know, some might say, “Dave, you’ve never been to Africa… why not?” Well I will tell you why, quite honestly I’ve not had the money. Travel in Africa is expensive, firstly all the obvious destinations are a long way away from blighty and cost a considerable amount to get to, but that’s not really the issue. I couldn’t possibly go to South Africa, Botswana, Kenya and the like without going on a safari and thats where the cash card groans heavily and shouts…. no chance Edwards, no chance! The cash card is absolutely right, a good safari can set you back thousands never mind hundreds and considering that my usual budget for a trip is around the £1500-2000 mark, I could probably wave bye bye to my car, flat and every other personal belonging before I could afford a safari as well.
So where in Africa could I go? Morroco? No, as much as I want to go there, thats the sort of destination that easyjet have started flying to which means it will be full of people my parents age going there to be ‘cultural’ whilst staying at the nearest Holiday Inn. Tunisia or The Gambia? Well they’re just package holiday destinations and I still haven’t come to terms with that yet so that was a no. Egypt? yeah Egypt could work, but with all the trouble in that area of the world it was probably not the safest place to go and do the sort of backpacking trip I enjoy. Ghana? Hmm.. Ghana, yeah that’ll do, its steeped in history my home village of Garstang is twinned with a town in Ghana and most importantly my girlfriend has been studying at the University of Ghana in Accra for the last 6 months… it seems like the obvious choice!
