Bondi At Christmas

Merry Christmas to the Brits, Nadolig Llawen to the Welshies (incl mum), Wesolych Swiat Bozego Narodzenia to the Poles, God Jul to the Swedes, Sawadee Pee Mai to the Thais, Nollaig Shona Dhuit to the Irish, Froehliche Weihnachten to the Germans. & Joyeux Noel to the Frenchies I’ve met along the way.

Well they say you should never meet your childhood hero as you will always feel let down. Its the same with anything you hype up i guess. Bondi Beach at Christmas being one of these things.

We arrived in Bondi on Christmas Eve and it was throwing it down and the whole place looked dull and horrible. Christmas morning I woke up and the weather didn’t look a whole lot better. I decided to phone the folks and wish them an early Merry Christmas and then went and got ready for the beach. After donning my boardshorts and my santa hat, Kate and i headed out for a traditional English Brekkie to fuel us up for the day ahead. Whilst having breakfast the sun came out and from that point onwards the weather stayed glorious.

This year Bondi beach had been made an alcohol free zone, because of people getting wrecked and then deciding to go swimming and then drowning. Therefore like true australians they found somewhere else to drink their beers and their goon. So after having a bit of drink at the hostel and some more food we headed down to the park area near the beach and set up camp for the day. At about 7pm we had finished our 5litres of wine and so Kate, Heather, Sarah & I all headed down to the big Gatecrasher party that was going on. Although it wasn’t exactly my scene, it didn’t take long until i was raving my little heart out. I got separated from the girls at the end of the night and so after a rather random chat with a few police men about what they’d been up to i walked back to the hostel and went to bed.

Not my usual Christmas Day but all in all it turned out to be ok. Not what i expected, but then again, when something is so hyped up it very rarely is as good as you expect it to be. I’m trying to “de-hype?” New year hoping that if i think it will be crap, it will, in actual fact be awsome!
